PASTOR BEN’S COMMENTS

“Guideposts” (9/95) published the story of Jim Stovall, who became totally blind at the age of 29. While he still had partial vision, he volunteered at a school for the blind. He was assigned to help a 4-year old boy, blind and severely handicapped. Stovall spent considerable time trying to convince the boy he could tie his own shoes or even climb stairs in spite of his limitations.

"No, I can't!" the boy insisted.

"Yes, you can," Stovall replied.

"No, I can't!" The verbal battle went on.

Meanwhile, Stovall fought his own limitations. Because of his deteriorating vision, he decided he had to quit his college courses. On his way to withdraw from college, he passed the school for the blind and decided to resign his volunteer position as well.

"It's just too tough," he explained. "I can't do it."

"Yes, you can!" said a little voice beside him. It was the little boy who refused to tie his shoes.

"No, I can't!" Stovall said with conviction.

"Yes, you can!"

Stovall realized that if he didn't continue, the child would give up too. So Jim Stovall stayed in school and graduated three and a half years later. The same week he graduated, his little friend tied his shoes and climbed a flight of stairs, sitting on the top step.

The apostle Paul, in Philippians, tells us we "can do all things through Christ who gives us strength." You and I need to be fortified by the reality of our God's limitless power, presence, and His wonderful love for us. The Holy Spirit will impress us with these truths as we study His Word. Paul also tells us, by example and precept, that we ought to encourage each other. You and I need to be a present help and encouragement in time of trial and trouble. As we do what we can, we need to focus on the promises of our God and join with our brothers and sisters in looking to our Heavenly Father. Here are some passages that come to mind, what others would you recite or list? Let these promises sink into our ears, mind, and heart. May they bring forth the fruits joy, peace, and faithfulness in our lives. Who could you encourage today?

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 43:1-3 “But now, this is what the LORD says--He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.’”

Matthew 6:31-33 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
